Kerry Masarati wins at KAYO-MMA

September 5th, 2011

kerry-mma.jpg

Saturday night saw Carlson Gracie Essex fighter Kerry Masarati win via unanimous decision in her highly entertaining two-round amateur bout at the KAYO-MMA event in Watford.

In front of a huge crowd Kerry showed her striking dominance in the cage, as well as scoring takedowns and managing to fend off any submission attempts by her opponent on the ground.

Kerry has worked hard with the team these past few months to improve her grappling in preparation for this fight, and has expressed thanks to everyone who helped contribute to this win.

We look forward to seeing more wins in the future. Oooossss Carlson Gracie!

Demetrius Ramos Seminar Report 10/07/2011

July 11th, 2011

instructors1.jpg

On Sunday several members of Carlson Gracie Essex travelled up to Felixstowe to attend the farewell seminar hosted by Demetrius Ramos. Demetrius is returning to the USA and to his academy in Arizona - Tucson Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Also in attendance to instruct were Eduardo Gonçalves and Checkmat Blackbelt Claudio Silva - who had less than 24hrs before won the WFC Middleweight Title Belt. Demetrius will be handing his classes in Norwich over to Claudio and Edu will be taking over the BJJ instruction at Dynamo. The seminar gave the students an opportunity to meet their new instructors and sample the high level of BJJ instruction they will continue to receive. Our own Alain Pozo was on hand to aid the demonstrations and support the students.

For the most part the seminar focussed on half guard techniques, with Demetrius and Edu both showing positions and techniques from the bottom, demonstrating how to react to the opponent and transition to sweep or take the back. Edu explained that these were unapologetically Black Belt level techniques, but that he was keen to expose the students to this level of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

seminar-3.jpg

Claudio followed Edu and Dema’s techniques with a half -guard pass which had been highly popular at this year’s Mundials, as well as showing the setup for the kneebar he used to win the finals of the recent Submission 1000 event, with several calf-crush, leg and ankle lock variations to use from the same position.  Claudio’s instruction came with a huge amount of detail with application beyond the moves being shown.

Demetrius ended the seminar with several belt promotions and an emotive speech about his time in the UK, thanking his students and friends and outlining the bright future he sees for BJJ in the area with Alain, Edu and Claudio leading the way. Edu, Claudio and Alain also gave a few words to thank Dema, talk of the mutual respect that exists between them and outline some of their expectations.

Carlson Gracie Essex would like to wish Demetrius well for the future. He is a fantastic instructor with true BJJ spirit – an example to us all. We hope some of our students will take the opportunity to visit and train with Demetrius at his academy in Arizona in the future.

All of the students at these clubs will always be very welcome to visit and train with us in Essex.

GoToTheGround 3 Report

 GTTG3 BJJ Essex

BJJ Essex juniors.jpg

Results:

-84kg Novice Gold -  Daniel Rainbird
+60kg Juvenile Gold -  Dom Harris
-60kg Juvenile Gold -  Kieren Hopgood
Female Mixed Silver -  Kerry Masarati
-84kg Novice Silver -  Dom Harris
-70kg Intermediate Bronze -  Shane Ruffell
-92kg Novice Bronze -  Nikolas Maschas
-77kg Novice Bronze -  Tom Baillie
-65kg Novice Bronze -  Kieren Hopgood

A huge congratulations to all the guys who competed at the weekend. Despite their young ages Kieren, Dom and Harry Ryan made the difficult step-up into the adult divisions for the first time in an open competition and conducted themselves fantastically, all winning fights. They have a bright future in the sport.  Frank Sandersan demonstrated a dangerous submission game in the intermediate division before having to withdraw due to injury. Ryan Carter won two fights via a smooth triangle to armbar combination. After 3 hard fights James Costa ceded the bronze to his teammate via the most amusing fight of the day (http://tinyurl.com/3tohap5) Kerry proved her potential and will to fight in her first grappling competition against a more experienced opponent- this is only the beginning. Daniel, Shane, Tom and Nik the Greek put on great displays of BJJ to win their medals.  All competitors displayed true Carlson Gracie spirit and made their coach very proud.

Carlson Gracie Essex also brought along a junior grappling team from Colchester, eager to put their skills to the test in tournament. They put on some great matches and clearly enjoyed themselves. Special mention to Anthony Ozer – who, at only five years old, may be one of the youngest no-gi competitors in the UK.

A massive THANK YOU to the organisers for putting on another great competition, and all the supporters from Carlson Gracie Essex who came along to help and cheer along your team mates.
